Vinca Minor will be releasing a new 3 song ep called It's So Quiet In Here on Friday June 16, 2017. More information to follow.
I've been working diligently on the new album. It is going through much revision and editing, however. In the meantime, I scored a short film for Collin and Erin Neal's called Wasteland Legends. It let me have some fun with my DSI Tempest drum machine. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LonW6-rJ5CU
I have just released a new EP for Hey Beautiful, my project with Mackenzie Buchanan, entitled Done With You. It is now on sale at Bandcamp: http://heybeautiful.bandcamp.com/album/done-with-you
It's my pleasure to announce that the debut ep by Vinca Major is now available for digital purchase through Bandcamp - https://vincaminor.bandcamp.com/album/swann-ep
I hope you enjoy it,
As it's a bit of a departure from the Vinca Minor sound, the new EP, Swann EP, will be released under the Vinca Major moniker. Currently we've set a release date of 1/22/16. I am only going to be releasing this on Bandcamp and doing minimal promotion, so if you enjoy it, please spread the word. I'll provide more information and a link before Friday.
Sorry it's been 3 months since my last post. I keep going back and forth on the ep and what songs should be on there. I hope I'll have more (better) news very soon on that.
I hope you are all having a wonderful holidays season.
There will be a new Vinca Minor ep coming soon. I'm also working on an album of instrumental piano pieces that I hope to release in 2016.
I've been working on the short film a lot as well as doing the music for two spots for Seattle Time Machine directed by Collin Neal. One of those you can see here:
I may also be releasing an ep of songs that I recorded during the Capital of Sorrow sessions for Vinca Minor, that I didn't put on the record. More on that soon. As well as new music.
Belated Happy New Year! There have been many wonderful things happening here and I'm hoping to start working on new material and playing more shows in 2015. I have one short film I will be scoring in the early part of this year - more information on that soon. There has been so much great new music out already this year - Aphex Twin, Bjork, Natalie Prass and new tracks by Purity Ring. It's shaping up to be a good year for music so far.
Sorry for the delay, but I wanted to say thank you to all of you who made it out to the release show in November. It meant a lot to see some familiar faces. Often times this business of music can be difficult and disappointing as I'm sure we've all heard ad naussuem, so I'll spare you. I'm not a very good salesman and the album is n't what most would call polished so promotion for the album has been difficult. I was tired of hearing too much production in music, so I wanted to make an album that was just as honest as I could make it. I recorded the album by myself in an old friend's fairly empty new house in a day - just me and a piano. I did very minimal mixing and "producing" because I wanted the songs and the performance to take center stage. I'm really happy with the result. You're not going to hear it on the radio or read about it in Rolling Stone, but it's what I wanted to make. I hope, if you get the chance to hear it, that you enjoy it. It's available on iTunes and Amazon for sale and streaming on Spotify.
On the eve of the release of Alone, With You, I have posted a live video of one of the new songs from the album on YouTube here:
I hope you enjoy it and the album. If you're in Seattle, please come out to the release show at The Josephine on Friday November 21st.
Thanks so much.
I am very pleased to announce that I will be performing with my friends Gretta Harley and Sacred Signs at the Josephine in Seattle, Washington on Friday November 21st, 2014 to celebrate the release of my new solo album, "Alone, With You". More information will be forthcoming.
I will be performing this Thursday September 11th at The Highline in Seattle, WA as part of the Black Thursday series. It starts at 9pm, is $7 and is 21+. I'll be playing some old songs as well as some re-workings of songs from the new album on guitar. It'd be great to see you there.
I am very excited to announce that I will be releasing my first "solo" album under my own name on November 11, 2014 on Second Shimmy. It is called Alone, With You and is just piano and vocals (or in some cases, just piano). Please stay tuned for updates. As always, thank you for being out there.
I have posted a new song, Deafening Sound, for my project Slow Return. If you get a chance to check it out, I'd love to know what you think. You can hear it here:
I completed a recording of a new collection of songs on a troubled weekend at the end of May in Astoria, Oregon. Most are just piano and voice and some are just piano. I hope to be able to share them with you soon. Hopefully, some live dates will be forthcoming.
My new project with Cait Cole now has a name - Slow Return. We have a Facebook site at https://www.facebook.com/slowreturn and have posted two songs on Soundcloud at https://soundcloud.com/slowreturn. Please check them out when you get a chance. We're hoping to start playing out within the next couple of months, so please keep checking back.
Thank you to those who listened to the songs I did for February album writing month. I think at least some of those will be reworked for the next Rope, Inc. album, which I believe is back "on". I'm also working a new project with the fantastic Cait Cole. No name for the project yet, but we're hard at work writing songs for it. I'll post more in the near future.
Sorry it has been awhile. While the Rope, Inc. website is up and operational, the project has been put on hold for the time being. Amongst his various other projects, Kramer is currently producing my friend, Gretta Harley's, first solo album, which promises to be fantastic and I can't wait to hear it.
I'm currently doing something called February Album Writing Month (fawm.org) and am currently three songs in. It's been a lot of fun so far as I've been experimenting and trying new things. You check the songs out on my soundcloud page at
Thanks and stay warm.
Happy Holidays! I hope your holidays are going very well. I have written a holiday song this year (as I do most years) and posted it on soundcloud. You can hear it here:
I hope you enjoy it.
I'm trying to carry on the tradition I started last year of recording holiday songs, having my friend, Milo Tobin, create a cover and then post it to Soundcloud. Here is my first song for this year.
There's now a new website up for my collaboration with Kramer, ROPE, INC., at www.ropeincmusic.com. Please check it out if you have a chance.
I'm also working on new Vinca Minor material and, hopefully, have more holiday songs this year.
I'm very happy to announce that Second Shimmy will be releasing the digital edition of the Rope, Inc. ep, Is That All?, on October 30th, 2013. We have also begun working on some new material.
Hello everyone. I just wanted to let you know that I will be performing during the Operadisiac Variety Hour this month. It is at Cafe Racer in Seattle on this Thursday 10/10/13 and it starts at 9pm. I am trying some new material so I would love to get some feedback if you are able to attend.
Also, the horror film I scored, The Anniversary, is playing 10/31/13 in Concrete, Washington.
I think I have more, but my memory is bad ...
Be well and take care.
I hope everyone is having a great summer so far. I've been busy with several projects that I'm really excited about. I'll post more information about those when they become more concrete. Speaking of which, the horror film I scored, The Anniversary, will be playing in the town where it was filmed (Concrete, Washington) on Halloween. It is also available for viewing on Vimeo's on-demand service and should be up on Indieflix.com shortly.
Just a quick bit of news for now. I participated in the 48 hour film challenge this past weekend with a bunch of really talented and passionate people as a composer for Faith Vs. Fate's entry, Ship Shifters. The result of that is being played at the Uptown Theater in Queen Anne (Seattle, WA) on Thursday 7/18 at 9pm. There are a bunch of other entries being shown that evening as well, so it should be a nice evening of film. If you're available it'd be great to see you there.
I've been stuck in SIFF-land for the past couple of weeks, which has actually been great. I saw two really good documentaries, "Big Star - Nothing Can Hurt Me" and "A Band Called Death", along with many other great films.
I have a couple of projects in the works right now, though I had to take my Rhodes in for repairs, so that project is delayed a bit.
Take care of yourselves.
Sorry it's been a while since my last post. I finished the horror film, The Anniversary, that I've been working on. I'm really excited to see the final version of that when it is done.
Besides that, I've been working on some solo piano (Rhodes) pieces, which may get released as an ep (or possibly a full-length) and trying to keep the depression at bay.
Hopefully, there will be more live shows on the horizon as well.
My band, Vinca Minor, will be sharing a bill with two of my favorite local bands, Isis and The Ghost and Blackpool Astronomy, at The Rendezvous on Friday February 15th at 10 pm.
I have a tentative set list for my acoustic show on Thursday February 7th. As of right now the set is:
Is There Nothing Left?
Can We Sleep Tonight
Happy new year and sorry for the delay in posts. I've been kind of under the weather. I'm still working on the score for The Anniversary, though I've seen a new cut and it looks great. I'm really happy to be a apart of this.
I'll also be performing at Cafe Racer on Thursday 2/7/13 somewhere between 9 and 11 as part of the monthly Operadisiac show there. I may be playing acoustic guitar for this one with some old and new songs. If you have any requests please let me know.
Take care everyone.
I've posted my fourth and fifth songs, The Little Drummer Boy and We Three Kings, to Soundcloud. You can check them out here:
These are probably the last two for 2012. Thanks for listening and thanks so much to Milo Tobin for his great covers.
I posted my third song, Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer, to soundcloud. You can check it out here: https://soundcloud.com/mattmenovcik/rudolph-the-red-nosed-reindeer
At a friend's urging, I am recording several traditional holiday songs this year. I'll be posting them on Soundcloud and may put up for sale on Bandcamp when I'm finished. Milo Tobin has agreed to make covers for all of the songs. The first one is up now: http://soundcloud.com/mattmenovcik/jingle-bells
Once a month, the songwriting group I belong to sets aside a day to just write however many songs we can. We then get together in the evening and play each other what we've come up with. Today is that day this month. I plan on posting the listenable material I come up with to my Soundcloud account if you are interested in taking a listen to some new works in progress. My Soundcloud page is here:https://soundcloud.com/mattmenovcik
The new Vinca Minor album, Capital of Sorrow, is officially available now at most online retailers (including Amazon and iTunes). We are about to head out to the release show and are very excited for the evening ahead.
I've added two new tracks to my soundcloud account. They are demos of pieces I will be playing at the Vinca Minor CD release show 11/6/12 at the Rendezvous.
I had a great visit to the set of The Anniversary yesterday. The cast and crew are all wonderful and are having a great time the movie. I can't wait to work on the score more.
I've been busy working on getting the new Vinca Minor album ready for release on 11/6/12. I've posted the new artwork on the Images page.
I'm steps closer to being finished with the Vinca Minor album. I hope to have definite details about the release very soon. I also hope to start working with Ines Andrade (the vocalist for Oh, So Briefly from C.B.) on more material and a longer version of Oh, So Briefly, which is funny, I know.
I'm currently putting the finishing touches on the forthcoming Vinca Minor album and accompanying short film. Things keep taking longer than anticipated, unfortunately.
Today is the release of Jherek Bischoff's Composed album, which features vocals from David Byrne and Caetano Veloso among other greats. It's really fantastic and you should definitely check it out. He is a great talent doing amazing things.
Tomorrow is the second showing of the short film I did the music for, C.B., at the Harvard Exit at 9pm.
More things are in the works, so please keep checking back.
Today is the first screening of the short I scored for the Seattle International Film Festival's Fly Filmmaking Challenge called C.B.. Today's screening only has stand by tickets left, but it will be screening again on 6/6/12. I hope you get a chance to check out the short as it really is great.
Last week ended with the bittersweet end of post production on the short film I scored, C.B., which will be playing at SIFF. The first showing is Memorial Day, May 28, 2012 at the Uptown in Queen Anne at 4pm. This short was such a joy to work on and turned out really great. It's always nice when a project is complete, but sad when you enjoyed working with everyone and really had fun with the creative process. There's a chance there's a full-length in my future if the production's kickstarter reaches it's goal - http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1083557099/the-anniversary-1/posts/220668?ref=email&show_token=ad9d62df5b761501.
There may also be a new show in the near future, please check back soon.
Lana Del Ray just came up on my iPod, so that's all for now. Thanks.
The show my band, Vinca Minor, is playing on 4/22/12 received a nice plug in the current issue of The Stranger:
Yards, Post Paint, Vinca Minor (Comet) The side project of Southerly's Krist Krueger, Yards essays expansive, elegant post-rock in the vein of genre standard-bearers such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Rachel's. He achieves a panoramic, orchestral grandeur that avoids the sometimes sentimental bombast of some others in this realm, like Explosions in the Sky and Sigur Rós. Vinca Minor (the artistic vehicle for Seattle-via-Detroit musician Matt Menovcik, ex-Saeta and Ms. Led) specializes in an eerie breed of minimalist loner-folk rock somewhere between early Red House Painters and Jandek. One of the shorts I scored recently, Zinka, by the Collin Joseph Neal will be showing at this year's STIFF on Thursday, May 10 at 8:00pm at the Grand Illusion Cinema in Seattle. It's a really great short and I'm very proud to have been a part of it. If you have a chance, please check it out.
Special thanks to Bob Smolenski for helping make the new site happen and for all of his great artist work. I'm very grateful.
I have a show on 4/22/12 with Vinca Minor. You can find more details on that on the shows page.
This weekend, I will be finishing up recording for the SIFF Fly Film Challenge film I am working on called I Like You. I'm really happy with this score and very excited to have a live string quartet performing the pieces. I'm especially happy with the song I wrote for the end credits, which was translated into and sung in French, by my extremely talented friend, Ines Andrade. Her vocals really make the song. Thanks, Ines.
I'm working on the construction of this new site. Changes should be happening quickly.
